Sandblasting
Mechanical removal of rust, scale and old coating; matting the surface.

Sandblasting removes contamination that chemical pretreatment cannot. Rust, scale, old paint and weld slag are cleaned mechanically, and the surface gains the profile the coating needs to grip.
Sandblasting does two jobs: it cleans the surface and roughens it. Mechanical adhesion of the coating depends on that profile; on an over-smooth surface even the best pretreatment may not be enough.
Hot-rolled sheet, welded structures, previously painted parts and cast surfaces go to the spray line after blasting.
