Powder coating glossary
The terms that come up in quotation correspondence. Using the same word for the same thing removes half of all misunderstandings.
- Electrostatic powder coating
- A method in which powdered paint is electrostatically charged, sprayed onto a surface and melted in an oven to form a film.
- Pretreatment
- Cleaning the surface before coating and forming the chemical layer the coating will bond to.
- Nano conversion coating
- Pretreatment chemistry forming a very thin conversion layer on the surface. Produces less waste and a thinner layer than classic phosphate.
- Hanger / bar
- The carrier from which a part hangs on the conveyor. Capacity is given in kilograms.
- Cardan conveyor
- An overhead conveyor with an articulated chain system that carries parts along the line.
- Cyclone
- The system that separates and recovers powder that did not adhere in the booth. It determines colour-change speed.
- RAL
- A colour standard widely used in industry. RAL Classic codes are four-digit numbers (e.g. RAL 5015).
- Film thickness
- The thickness of the cured coating in microns. It directly affects durability and appearance.
- Polymerisation
- The powder melting and cross-linking in the oven to become a permanent film. Temperature and time must be held together.
- Blasting
- Removing rust, scale and old coating with a high-pressure abrasive and giving the surface a profile.
